Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ἑλληνορθόδοξη Ἐκκλησία, (Ellinorthódoxi Ekklisía), is any of three classes of Christian churches, each associated in some way with Greek Christianity, Levantine Arabic-speaking Christians or more broadly the rite used in the Greek Byzantine Empire

The broader meaning refers to “the entire body of Orthodox (Chalcedonian) Christianity, sometimes also called ‘Eastern Orthodox’, ‘Greek Orthodox’, or generally ‘the Greek Church’.

A second, narrower meaning refers to “any of several independent churches within the worldwide communion of [Eastern] Orthodox Christianity that retain the use of the Greek language in formal ecclesiastical settings”. In this sense, the Greek Orthodox Churches are the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and its dependencies, the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem, the Church of Greece and the Church of Cyprus.

The third meaning refers to the Church of Greece, an Eastern Orthodox Church operating within the modern borders of Greece.

Historically, the term “Greek Orthodox” has been used to describe all Eastern Orthodox churches, since the term “Greek” can refer to the heritage of the Byzantine Empire.

During the first eight centuries of Christian history, most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian Church took place in the Byzantine Empire or its sphere of influence, where the Greek language was spoken and used for most theological writings.

The empire’s capital, Constantinople, was an early important center of Christianity, and its liturgical practices, traditions, and doctrines were gradually adopted throughout Eastern Orthodoxy, still providing the basic patterns of contemporary Orthodoxy.

Thus, Eastern Orthodox came to be called “Greek” Orthodox in the same way that Western Christians came to be called “Roman” Catholic. However, the appellation “Greek” was abandoned recently by the Slavic and other Eastern Orthodox churches.

Thus, by the early 21st century, generally only those churches most closely tied to Greek or Byzantine culture and ethnicity around the world, were called “Greek Orthodox” in common parlance.

Το Αιγαίο Πέλαγος πήρε το όνομά του από τον βασιλιά Αιγέα της Αθήνας, ο οποίος πνίγηκε στη θάλασσα επειδή πίστευε ότι ο γιος του, Θησέας, είχε πεθάνει κατά τη διάρκεια της προσπάθειάς του να σκοτώσει τον Μινώταυρο στην Κρήτη. Όταν ο Θησέας ξέχασε να σηκώσει ένα λευκό πανί για να σηματοδοτήσει την επιτυχία του, ο πατέρας του, Αιγέας, βλέποντας το αναμενόμενο μαύρο πανί της ήττας, έπεσε από έναν γκρεμό στη θάλασσα από κάτω.

Τα ελληνικά νησιά κατοικούνται συνεχώς από Ελληνες και είναι σημαντικά εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια, με ανθρώπινη εγκατάσταση που χρονολογείται από τη Ελληνικη Νεολιθική περίοδο (περίπου 7000 π.Χ.).

Σημαντικοί αρχαίοι πολιτισμοί όπως ο Μινωικός (Κρήτη), ο Κυκλαδικός και ο Μυκηναϊκός πολιτισμός άκμασαν στα νησιά, αναπτύσσοντας προηγμένες τέχνες, αρχιτεκτονική και ναυτικές δεξιότητες, αφήνοντας πίσω τους μια πλούσια αρχαιολογική κληρονομιά. Σήμερα, τα νησιά παραμένουν σημαντικά πολιτιστικά και ιστορικά κέντρα, προσελκύοντας επισκέπτες για την ιστορία, την ομορφιά και τον μοναδικό τρόπο ζωής τους, όπως ο περίφημος μακρόβιος πληθυσμός στην Ικαρία.

Ορισμένα ελληνικά νησιά βρίσκονται συχνά στα ανοικτά των ακτών σύγχρονων χωρών των οποίων οι ακτές κατοικούνταν ήδη από Έλληνες πριν από την αρχαιότητα, όπως οι ακτές της Μικράς Ασίας και της Βόρειας Ηπείρου. Μόλις τον 20ό αιώνα ο διωγμος των ελληνικών πληθυσμών οδήγησε σε αλλαγή στο εθνοτικό τοπίο: σήμερα, τα νησιά με ελληνικό πληθυσμό βρίσκονται κοντά σε περιοχές που τώρα κατοικούνται από άλλες εθνοτικές ομάδες, όπως στη Μικρά Ασία και τη Βόρεια Ήπειρο.

Το Αιγαίο Πέλαγος της Ελλάδας είναι τόσο μπλε λόγω της έλλειψης φυτοπλαγκτού και αιωρούμενων σωματιδίων, γεγονός που επιτρέπει στο ηλιακό φως να διεισδύει βαθιά και να διασκορπίζεται, αντανακλώντας το μπλε μήκος κύματος. Τα καθαρά, ήρεμα νερά του και ο ανοιχτόχρωμος βυθός του, συχνά φτιαγμένος από θρυμματισμένο μάρμαρο, συμβάλλουν επίσης στην έντονη μπλε απόχρωση του, αντανακλώντας το φως πιο αποτελεσματικά. Το ίδιο το νερό απορροφά επίσης το κόκκινο και το κίτρινο φως περισσότερο από το μπλε φως, ενισχύοντας περαιτέρω την μπλε εμφάνιση, ειδικά σε μεγάλα βάθη.

Ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα δημιουργήματα του ελληνικού πολιτισμού του Αιγαίου είναι η τέχνη του, μοναδική στην εποχή του, όχι μόνο στο Αιγαίο αλλά και σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Η λιτότητα και η ευρηματικότητα που χαρακτηρίζουν τον καλλιτέχνη της Εποχής του Χαλκού αντικατοπτρίζονται στα αντικείμενα που παράγει. Από εκείνη την αρχαία εποχή, το Αιγαίο είναι πνευματικά φορτισμένο και αντικατοπτρίζεται στη λογοτεχνία, την ποίηση και την τέχνη.

Η Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική II (2700–2400/2300 π.Χ.) σηματοδοτεί την ακμή του κυκλαδικού πολιτισμού, με την επέκταση των οικισμών και των νεκροταφείων, την ανάπτυξη της μεταλλοτεχνίας (χάλκινα όπλα και εργαλεία), την άνθηση της μαρμάρινης γλυπτικής (εξαιρετικά ειδώλια και αγγεία) και την αύξηση των εμπορικών ανταλλαγών με την ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα, την Κρήτη και το Αιγαίο. Η Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική ΙΙΙ (2300–2000 π.Χ.) είναι η τελευταία φάση του πολιτισμού, η οποία χαρακτηρίζεται από την παρακμή και την αλλαγή στα χαρακτηριστικά της κεραμικής.

Τα επιτεύγματα της αγγειογραφίας κατά την Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική ΙΙ και την Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική ΙΙΙ περίοδο και η εισαγωγή της πολυχρωμίας στη διακόσμηση των Μεσοκυκλαδικών αγγείων σίγουρα συνέβαλαν στην ανάδειξη της ζωγραφικής ως σημαντικού μέσου καλλιτεχνικής έκφρασης. Έτσι, ενώ η Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική περίοδος θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί ως ο αιώνας της γλυπτικής για τις Κυκλάδες, η Μέση Εποχή του Χαλκού (περ. 2000–1650 π.Χ.), η -Μεσοκυκλαδική- και η πρώιμη Ύστερη Κυκλαδική θα μπορούσαν δικαιολογημένα να διεκδικήσουν τον τίτλο του αιώνα της μεγάλης ζωγραφικής.
